Kefalos Kos travel guide

The popular Kos resort of Kefalos sits on the hillside above Kamari Bay in the south west of the island.

Tourist development has now spread right down the hillside to the bay proper so the whole area is often now referred to as Kefalos, even the beach area of Kamari.

The hill village of Kefalos lies about 40 kilometres from Kefalos Town and it's a journey of about 20 minutes from the Kos Ippokratis airport (KGS) which is the only air gateway in and out of the popular summer holiday destination of Kos.

The area around Kefalos comes as a sharp contrast to the flat plain of central Kos with some dramatic mountain scenery, the heritage of much ancient volcanic activity.

The combination of nearby airport and long sandy beach at Kamari has turned Kefalos into one of the a major holiday resorts of Kos.

Below the old hillside village is a flood of purpose-built tourist apartments which now spreads along the back of Kamari beach.

The streets in the tourist beach area are packed with bars, cafes, shops and mini-markets, along with a couple of nightclubs. Although brochures may describe Kefalos nightlife as 'lively' this is very much a family holiday resort.

The beach at Kamari is very long, at around five kilometres, and a mix of sand and shingle with a huge range of water sports. Many Kefalos tourists head across the bay to a string of very sandy beaches.
