Skala Eressos Lesvos travel guide

The villages of Eressos and Skala Eressos are found on the south-west coast of Lesvos.

This area was the birthplace of the poetess Sapho and the beach resort of Skala Eressos was once a Mecca for lesbians. It is now much more of a family destination and a favourite place for honeymooners.

Skala Eressos has one of the best beaches on Lesvos. It has three kilometres of wide, open sands and a line of cafes and tavernas sitting on stilts along the shore.

Beach restaurants along the waterfront have bamboo covered decks and one of the resort's main attractions is eating out with the waves lapping only a few feet away.

Skala Eressos is on a flat plain, so cycle riding is popular and there are several places here to hire bikes. The area around Skala Eressos is very green and there are many trails and paths for walkers. The streets of the resort are traffic free.

Skala Eressos also has a fresh water river that feeds a natural lake about halfway along the beach. This is home to frogs, fish and hundreds of terrapins and feeding them is a popular pastime for holidaymakers. The lake also attracts rare birds.

There is a stone beach on the other side of the harbour which has a good reputation for snorkeling, Skala Eressos was also an important commercial centre in ancient times and the remains of the ancient city walls can be seen.

The resort has many cultural events during the summer with a Women's Festival in early September.
