Island photo gallery by DAVID KEANE

Nysteri beach, Thassos, lies just to the east of the main port town of Limenas. Like neighbouring Glyfada it is relatively unknown as both beaches are fronted by middle market hotels whose frontages hide the beaches from the general public. Although hotel residents can enjoy what seem like private hotel beaches they are in fact public and, provided you can find a place to park of the main road, there is nothing to stop you wandering down through the hotels or finding other access points to the beaches. That said, hotel staff are very welcoming anyway, particularly if you patronise the cafe terrace where, at Nysteri at least, they serve excellent snacks at tables that overlook the beach and the wide bay of Limenas. Ferries from Keramouti and Kavala pass by regularly. The beach at Nysteri is pure sand with occasional stone and relatively shallow. There is a small taverna in the shady wood behind and woodland paths. The beach also has a changing room and there are toilets at the taverna.

The Nysteri beach approach through the Nysteri Hotel gardens. Though there is parking at the hotel it is limited and visitors should park on the roadside above or at the other end of the beach.

Overlooking the secluded beach from Nysteri Hotel. The sun beds were once free but now there is a charge. The eastern end of the beach is free of sunbeds.

Looking east along Nysteri beach, Thassos from the hotel cafe. There are dense woods of pine at the far end and behind the beach a small taverna. Around the headland is the beach at Glyfada.

The uninhabited island of Thassopoula seen from the terrace cafe of the Nysteri Hotel, Thassos. Ferries from the mainland port of Keramouti pass the island at regular intervals.

The eastern end of the beach at Nysteri peters out and gives way to dense pine forest. A path through the woods eventually reaches the main road and Glyfada beach.

There is a small concrete and iron jetty at the western end of the beach and beyond that some rocks which turn to steep cliffs around the headland. The water is shallow right to the end of the jetty.

Another view from the hotel terrace with the islet of Thassopoula on the horizon and the small jetty below. Terrace tables are shrouded by overhanging vines and surrounded by flowers to provide welcome shade from the sun.

There's that Nysteri beach jetty again but it is ideal for photographing especially early morning when the sea is calm and there is no ferry traffic in the bay.

OK the very last picture of that jetty although it is very hard to stop photographing it.

Nysteri beach Thassos

A last look along the beach at Nysteri, Thassos. The great thing about this beach is that it rarely gets crowded despite being so near Limenas town. If you are staying near the new port it is even walkable.
